How Hard Is the NCMHCE Exam? What the Numbers Say

Published 2026-10-30 · Facts and text checked 2026-10-16 · Reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer

The NCMHCE is hard because it tests clinical judgment inside cases: 11 case studies, each followed through intake and two sessions, with 100 scored questions in 225 minutes. The cut score is not fixed but set for each form, and counseling skills and interventions alone are 30% of the exam.

A recall-style study method does not transfer well: you need to read a narrative, keep track of where the client is in treatment and pick the best next step among plausible options.

The long session is part of the difficulty. Plan your pace per case and use the scheduled break after the fifth case study.
