NCMHCE Exam: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Published 2026-11-02 · Facts and text checked 2026-10-16 · Questions from our NCMHCE study guide · Reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer

The NCMHCE mistakes that cost the most points: studying it like a recall test, losing track of whether the case is at intake or in a later session, under-weighting counseling skills, which are 30% of the exam, chasing a fixed cut score that does not exist, and rushing the long 225-minute session.

  1. Studying it like a recall exam. The NCMHCE is built on 11 clinical case studies: each question is about this client at this point in treatment. Practice deciding, not defining.
  2. Ignoring where you are in the case. Each case moves from the intake summary to two later sessions. The right answer at intake can be the wrong one in session two.
  3. Under-weighting counseling skills. Counseling Skills and Interventions is the largest area at 30%. Interventions and in-session responses deserve the most practice time.
  4. Chasing a fixed passing score. There is no fixed cut: NBCC sets it by standard setting and equating for each form. Aim to be clearly above the line on mixed practice.
  5. Rushing the long session. You get 225 minutes of exam time with one scheduled 15-minute break after the fifth case study. Pace yourself case by case.
  6. Retesting too soon. You must wait 30 days from the test date before retesting, longer if your state board requires it. Use the wait to work on the areas your score report shows.

Practice the fix: NCMHCE practice test.
