Quick answers to what NCMHCE candidates ask most: number of questions, exam length, passing score, fees, content areas, retakes and the 2027 version. Each answer comes from the NBCC NCMHCE page and candidate handbook, checked on October 16, 2026, with sources linked. Your state board's rules always come first.
How many questions are on the NCMHCE?
The exam has 11 clinical case studies, one of them unscored. Each case has 9-15 multiple-choice questions; 100 questions are scored, out of 130-150 per form (NBCC).
How long is the NCMHCE?
225 minutes of exam time inside a 255-minute session that also includes the nondisclosure agreement, a tutorial and one scheduled 15-minute break after the fifth case study (NBCC candidate handbook).
What is the passing score for the NCMHCE?
There is no fixed number. NBCC sets the cut score through standard setting and statistical equating for each exam form; the maximum score is 100.
How much does the NCMHCE cost?
The NBCC candidate handbook does not list one national fee: it depends on your state, in your state's supplement. Rescheduling costs $50 (NBCC candidate handbook).
What does the NCMHCE cover?
Professional Practice and Ethics 15%, Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis 25%, Treatment Planning 15%, Counseling Skills and Interventions 30% and Core Counseling Attributes 15%; Areas of Clinical Focus is tested through the cases (NBCC).
When can I retake the NCMHCE?
After 30 days from your test date, or later if your state board requires it. The number of attempts is set by your state board (NBCC).
Is the NCMHCE harder than the NCE?
They test differently. The NCE is a 200-item multiple-choice exam; the NCMHCE puts every question inside a clinical case study, so it rewards applied clinical judgment. Your state decides which one you need.
Is the NCMHCE changing?
NBCC has announced a new 2027 version of the exam. Check the NBCC page for the date and the new specifications before you book.
