How Hard Is the CPCE Exam? What the Numbers Say
Published 2026-10-29 · Facts and text checked 2026-11-02 · Reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer
The CPCE is hard mainly because it is broad: 160 questions spread evenly over eight CACREP areas in 225 minutes, and no single national passing score, since each program sets its own cut. Candidates who study every area, including group work and research, are in a much better position than those who skip them.

| Passing score (how it works) | Set by your university program, not by CCE: each program decides its own cut (passing) score.CCE: CPCE Candidate Handbook (revised March 25, 2025) · checked 2026-10-10 |
There is no official national pass rate to quote: CCE sends results and national statistics to programs, and each program decides its own passing score. That means two students with the same score can get different outcomes at different universities.
What makes it feel difficult: every area has the same weight, so a weak area costs as much as any other; questions often ask you to apply a theory to a client, not just to name it; and 24 of the 160 questions are unscored pretest items you cannot identify, so every question deserves your full attention.
