CPCE Exam: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Published 2026-11-01 · Facts and text checked 2026-11-02 · Questions from our CPCE study guide · Reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer

The most common CPCE mistakes are predictable: studying for a passing score that does not exist nationally, skipping group work or research because they feel easy, mixing up developmental theorists, and spending too long on single questions. Each one has a simple fix, listed below with the official facts behind it.

  1. Studying for a fixed passing score. CCE does not set one. Your university program sets its own cut score, so ask your coordinator early and aim well above it.
  2. Skipping the two areas you think are easy. All eight CACREP areas carry the same number of questions (20 each). Group Counseling and Research and Program Evaluation count as much as Ethics.
  3. Mixing up developmental theorists. Many questions turn on one stage or one term. Learn each theorist with the age range and the key word that names the stage.
  4. Memorizing test statistics without the meaning. Assessment questions ask what reliability, validity and score types tell you about a client. Practice reading a score, not just the definition.
  5. Spending too long on one question. You have 160 questions and 225 minutes of testing. Mark a hard question, move on and come back at the end.
  6. Waiting for a pass or fail on the score report. The Pearson VUE report shows raw scores without a pass or fail status. Your program tells you the result against its cut score.

Practice the fix: CPCE practice test.
