The four sections side by side
| Section | Questions | Unscored | Scored | Time limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 45 | 6 | 39 | 55 minutes |
| Mathematics | 38 | 4 | 34 | 57 minutes |
| Science | 50 | 6 | 44 | 60 minutes |
| English and Language Usage | 37 | 4 | 33 | 37 minutes |
| Total | 170 | 20 | 150 | 209 minutes |
The 209 minutes is simply the four section limits added together (55 + 57 + 60 + 37). Each section has its own clock, so time you save in one section does not carry into the next.
How much time each question gets
Divide each section's minutes by its questions and the pace looks very different from section to section:
- Reading: 55 minutes for 45 questions, about 73 seconds each.
- Mathematics: 57 minutes for 38 questions, about 90 seconds each.
- Science: 60 minutes for 50 questions, about 72 seconds each.
- English and Language Usage: 37 minutes for 37 questions, exactly 60 seconds each.
These figures count all questions in a section, scored or not, because ATI mixes the unscored questions in with the rest. Plan your pace as if every question counts.
Order, breaks and the one-way rule
The sections come in a fixed order: reading, math, science, then English and language usage. Inside a section you can move between questions. Once you finish a section you cannot go back to it. ATI allows one 10-minute break, after the math section, whether you test at home, at your school or at a test center. ATI lists the break separately from the section limits.
A calculator is built into the exam, and personal calculators are not allowed. For scratch work you may have one blank sheet of paper or a small whiteboard and two writing instruments. Nothing else may be on the desk.
What the scored questions cover
ATI's content breakdown adds up to the scored questions in each section: 39, 34, 44 and 33.
- Reading (39): key ideas and details 15, craft and structure 9, integration of knowledge and ideas 15.
- Mathematics (34): numbers and algebra 18, measurement and data 16.
- Science (44): human anatomy and physiology 18, biology 9, chemistry 8, scientific reasoning 9.
- English and Language Usage (33): conventions of standard English 12, knowledge of language 11, using language and vocabulary to express ideas in writing 10.
Question types you will see
Not every question is a single-answer multiple choice. ATI lists five types: multiple choice, multiple select (select all that apply), fill in the blank, ordered response and hot spots.
Frequently asked questions
Can I go back to an earlier section on the TEAS?

Is there a break during the TEAS?
Yes. ATI allows one 10-minute break after the math section.
Can I bring my own calculator?
No. A calculator is built into the exam and personal calculators are not allowed.
How many TEAS questions are unscored?
Twenty: 6 in reading, 4 in math, 6 in science and 4 in English and language usage. ATI mixes them in with the scored questions.
