Question 1Medium
Blood is classified as connective tissue. Which component of blood represents its extracellular matrix?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Plasma
Blood is a connective tissue because its formed elements, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets, are suspended in plasma, which acts as the extracellular matrix. Choosing a cell or platelet as the matrix reverses the structural roles.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 129). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 2Medium
A patient has a mass pressing on the right carotid bifurcation, and the clinician notes bradycardia and hypotension. Which structure contains the baroreceptors being stimulated?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Carotid sinus
The carotid sinus is a dilation at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery and contains baroreceptors that detect changes in blood pressure. The carotid body is a chemoreceptor, not a baroreceptor.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 124). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 3Medium
An element appears in the diagonal stair-step region between metals and nonmetals. It has a shiny appearance but conducts electricity only under certain conditions. Which classification best fits this element?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Metalloid
Elements along the stair-step line are metalloids and show properties between metals and nonmetals. A metal would conduct electricity readily, while a nonmetal would not show this conditional conductivity.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 4). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 4Easy
Louis Pasteur's experiment with swan-neck flasks showed that broth did not produce microbial growth unless the neck was opened to the environment. Which principle of cell theory does this support?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
The swan-neck flask experiment showed that microorganisms did not appear in sterilized broth, so cells could only arise from cells already present. This supports the principle that all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 66). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 5Medium
Which sentence is grammatically correct?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Anyone with a latex allergy is assigned a latex-free kit.
'Anyone' is a singular indefinite pronoun and takes the singular verb 'is.' The other choices pair singular indefinite pronouns with plural verbs or pair the plural indefinite pronoun 'several' with a singular verb.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 164). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 6Easy
Simplify: 24 ÷ 6 × 2.
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 8
Multiplication and division are performed left to right. Dividing 24 by 6 gives 4, then multiplying by 2 gives 8. Multiplying 6 by 2 first yields 2, which is incorrect.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 18). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 7Hard
A narrative passage describes how hospital staff evacuated patients during a fire, moved them to a triage area in the parking lot, and transferred the most critical cases to a nearby hospital. Which sentence is the most appropriate main idea for this passage?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. The evacuation showed that clear communication and teamwork save lives in a crisis.
In a narrative passage, the main idea is the significance of the events rather than a timeline or isolated detail. The other choices are specific facts from the narrative or a later outcome, not the larger point the story demonstrates.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 69). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 8Medium
In the four-quadrant system formed by a horizontal line through the umbilicus and a vertical line through the midline, a finding in the LUQ is located in which of the following areas?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Superior to the umbilicus and to the left of the midline
LUQ stands for left upper quadrant, which is above the horizontal transumbilical line and to the left of the vertical midline. The other choices describe the LLQ, RUQ, or RLQ.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 98). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 9Hard
Which statement correctly identifies the three main routes of capillary exchange?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse through endothelial cells; water and small solutes pass between cells through intercellular clefts; larger proteins and hormones are transported by endocytosis and exocytosis.
Capillary exchange has three routes: lipid-soluble gases diffuse through the endothelial cells, water and small solutes pass through intercellular clefts, and larger molecules use vesicular transport involving endocytosis and exocytosis. The other options reverse or omit one of these routes.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 84). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 10Medium
Two nonmetal atoms form a bond with an electronegativity difference of 0.5. According to the usual cutoff used to classify covalent bonds, what is this bond best classified as?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Polar covalent
An electronegativity difference above approximately 0.4 and below approximately 1.7 indicates a polar covalent bond. A difference of 0.5 therefore represents a covalent bond in which electrons are shared unequally.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 123). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 11Medium
A researcher claims a new diet improves daily energy. The treatment group follows the diet and is also told to walk 30 minutes per day, while the control group makes no diet change and is told not to alter their exercise routines. Why are the researcher's conclusions unreliable?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. The treatment group differed from the control group in both diet and exercise.
Because diet and exercise changed at the same time, any difference in energy could be caused by either variable or both. The experiment violates the rule of changing only one independent variable.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 107). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 12Hard
Which sentence contains two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. When the overnight shift ended, the day nurse accepted the report, and the unit clerk updated the board.
Option C opens with the dependent clause 'When the overnight shift ended' and then contains two independent clauses joined by and. Option A has two independent clauses and no dependent clause, D has one dependent and one independent clause, and B is a simple sentence with a compound predicate.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 96). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 13Easy
During an intake assessment, a client is documented as having consumed 0.6 liter of a 1 liter water pitcher. Which fraction represents this amount in simplest form?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 3/5
The decimal 0.6 is read as six tenths, written as 6/10, and the common factor 2 divides both the numerator and denominator to give the simplest form 3/5. The distractor 6/10 is equal in value but is not simplified; 2/5 would correspond to 0.4, not 0.6.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 115). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 14Easy
A health care passage opens by claiming that regular hand hygiene is the single most effective way to reduce hospital-acquired infections. Later paragraphs describe experiments comparing soap and alcohol-based hand sanitizer, cite updated guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and give examples of hospital units where infection rates dropped after a new hand hygiene campaign. In the roof and walls analogy, where the main idea is the roof, what do the later paragraphs represent?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. They are the walls: the facts, statistics, and examples that support the main claim about hand hygiene.
The research findings and examples are the supporting details that hold the opening claim up, exactly as walls hold up a roof. The closest error would be to treat those details as restatements of the main idea, but evidence and examples make sense only as support for the claim.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 62). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 15Easy
Which body position is the standard anatomical position?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Standing upright, face forward, arms at the sides, palms facing forward
Anatomical position requires an upright stance, face forward, arms at the sides, and palms facing forward. The palms-forward hand position is the standard reference for anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 109). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 16Medium
At the venous end of a capillary, capillary hydrostatic pressure falls to approximately 15 mmHg while plasma colloid osmotic pressure remains about 25 mmHg. Which statement best describes the net movement of fluid?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Fluid is reabsorbed into the capillary because colloid osmotic pressure exceeds hydrostatic pressure
Because hydrostatic pressure has fallen below the colloid osmotic pressure, net reabsorption into the capillary occurs. The statement claiming hydrostatic pressure still exceeds oncotic pressure would only be true at the arterial end.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 142). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 17Easy
What structural feature do neutral lithium, sodium, and potassium atoms have in common?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. They each have one valence electron in an s orbital
Group 1 atoms have an ns1 outer configuration, and that single s electron drives their similar chemistry. They do not share the same neutron count, total electron count, or number of occupied shells.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 99). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 18Easy
Researchers test whether caffeine affects alertness. Participants are randomly assigned to drink either caffeinated coffee or decaffeinated coffee, then complete a reaction-time task. Which quantity is the dependent variable?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. the reaction time in milliseconds on the task
The dependent variable is the outcome measured to see whether the independent variable had an effect. Reaction time is what the researchers measured, while the coffee type is the independent variable and drink amount plus time of day are factors held constant.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 85). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 19Easy
Which sentence is correct?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. The attending physician and the resident coordinate the patient's care plan.
A compound subject joined by 'and' takes a plural verb, so 'coordinate' is correct. The other options use a singular verb with a compound plural subject.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 146). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 20Medium
At the end of a procedure, 0.6 of a 1 L bag of irrigation solution remains. What fraction of the original bag remains, written in simplest form?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. 3/5
0.6 is six tenths, so the initial fraction is 6/10. Dividing both terms by 2 gives 3/5, which is simplest form; 6/10 is equivalent but not simplified.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 2). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 21Hard
Which reason best explains why a main idea question can usually be answered after an initial skim, before a full reading?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Writers typically place main ideas in predictable locations, such as the title and the first or last sentences of paragraphs.
Expository writers usually announce or restate their central point in the title, the opening, or the conclusion, so a guided skim can identify it. The incorrect options rely on absolute claims that do not describe real texts.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 63). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 22Easy
During elbow flexion, the biceps brachii shortens to lift the forearm, while the triceps brachii relaxes and lengthens. What role does the triceps brachii play in this movement?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Antagonist
An antagonist opposes the action of the prime mover. Because the triceps brachii extends the elbow, it opposes the flexor action of the biceps during elbow flexion.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 82). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 23Easy
At the venous end of a systemic capillary, most fluid is pulled back into the bloodstream because:
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. The osmotic pressure of plasma proteins exceeds the capillary hydrostatic pressure
Plasma proteins such as albumin exert a colloid osmotic pull of about 25 mmHg. At the venous end, capillary hydrostatic pressure falls to about 15 mmHg, so the osmotic force dominates and draws fluid back into the capillary.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 53). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 24Easy
Element X is a soft, silvery metal with one valence electron. It reacts violently with water and forms a compound with the formula XCl. To which group of the periodic table does element X belong?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Group 1
A Group 1 alkali metal has one valence electron, loses it to form a 1+ ion, and fits a compound formula such as XCl. Group 2 metals form 2+ ions rather than 1+ ions.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 131). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 25Easy
A scientist compares a typical bacterial cell with a typical human cheek cell under a microscope. Which size relationship is most likely to be observed?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. The bacterial cell is much smaller than the cheek cell.
Prokaryotic cells, including most bacteria, are typically 1 to 5 micrometers in diameter, whereas many eukaryotic cells are about 10 to 100 micrometers. Thus the bacterial cell is generally much smaller than a human cheek cell.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 134). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 26Hard
Which option best revises the dangling modifier in the sentence 'After reviewing the lab results, the treatment plan was revised'?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. After reviewing the lab results, the nurse revised the treatment plan.
The opening phrase implies a person reviewed, so the subject following the comma must be that person, not the treatment plan. Option D names the nurse as the actor and therefore fixes the dangling modifier; option B is the closest distractor because it still leaves no logical subject for 'reviewing.'
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 146). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 27Medium
A recipe for an oral rehydration drink serves 6 patients and calls for 2 cups of water. If the nurse needs enough for 9 patients while keeping the recipe proportions, how many cups of water are required?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 3 cups
The number of patients increases by a factor of 9/6 = 1.5, so the water increases by the same factor: 2 × 1.5 = 3 cups. The 2.25-cup option would require a serving ratio of 9:8 rather than 9:6.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 24). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 28Medium
A nurse is reviewing a patient's chart after a shift change. Which entry is a subjective complaint rather than an objective finding?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Patient reports chest tightness
Chest tightness is a symptom reported by the patient, making it subjective data. The other entries are measurable or observable clinical findings, so they are objective data.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 143). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 29Medium
A radiologist reviews a coronal (frontal) section of the head. Which two portions does this section separate?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Anterior and posterior portions
The coronal, or frontal, plane runs vertically from side to side and divides the body into anterior and posterior portions. Sagittal planes separate left and right, and transverse planes separate superior and inferior.
From practice test 4 of our TEAS study guide (question 127). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 30Hard
When a healthy adult rapidly rises from a squatting position and feels lightheaded for a moment, which baroreceptor-mediated response occurs?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Baroreceptor firing decreases, causing withdrawal of parasympathetic tone and sympathetic constriction of arterioles
Standing quickly reduces venous return and lowers arterial pressure, so baroreceptor firing decreases. The cardiovascular center responds by withdrawing parasympathetic tone and increasing sympathetic outflow, which raises heart rate and constricts arterioles to restore blood pressure.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 108). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 31Easy
An atom has 7 protons and 7 neutrons. Which of the following correctly writes this atom in nuclide notation?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Mass number 14 as a superscript to the upper left of N and atomic number 7 as a subscript to the lower left of N
Mass number is the total of protons and neutrons, so this isotope has mass number 14; atomic number is the proton count, 7. Nuclide notation places the mass number as the upper left superscript and the atomic number as the lower left subscript, so writing the atomic number above the mass number reverses the format.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 137). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 32Medium
During a randomized trial of a new analgesic, a substantial number of participants who received an inert placebo reported pain relief. What is the best explanation for this improvement?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. The participants' expectation that they were receiving an effective pain reliever caused the improvement.
The placebo effect is a real change in outcome produced by a participant's expectation of benefit, not by a chemical ingredient. Because the capsule was inert, belief is the best explanation.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 58). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 33Easy
Why is the group of words 'Because the wound was infected' not a complete sentence?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. It is a dependent clause that begins with 'because' and leaves the thought unfinished.
The clause has a subject and a verb, but 'because' is a subordinating conjunction that makes the thought incomplete until an independent clause is added. The closest distractor is wrong because the clause clearly contains the verb 'was infected.'
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 48). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 34Easy
Convert 45% to a decimal.
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. 0.45
Drop the percent sign and move the decimal point two places to the left. Starting with 45.0, this gives 0.45.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 54). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 35Medium
A test-taker is about to begin a new reading passage. Which sequence of actions matches the recommended reading method?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Skim the passage first, read the questions, then scan or close read only as each question requires
Skimming first gives the passage's topic and organization and allows main idea questions to be answered immediately. Scanning and close reading are targeted follow-ups driven by the specific questions.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 46). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 36Medium
Which example best represents exocrine gland secretion?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Sweat gland releasing sweat through a duct onto the skin
Exocrine glands secrete their products through ducts onto an epithelial surface. Sweat glands are classic exocrine glands, whereas the thyroid, pancreatic islets, and adrenal medulla are endocrine glands that release hormones into the blood.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 106). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 37Medium
A patient with cirrhosis has a decreased production of plasma albumin. Which pressure in the capillaries is most directly reduced by this change?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Capillary colloid osmotic pressure (oncotic pressure)
Albumin is the principal plasma protein responsible for colloid osmotic pressure, which pulls water into the capillary. A decrease in albumin lowers this force directly; systolic, hydrostatic, and pulse pressures are governed by cardiac output and arterial resistance, not by the plasma protein concentration.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 53). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 38Hard
Potassium is far below lithium in Group 1. Which statement best explains why potassium has a larger atomic radius than lithium despite having more protons?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Potassium's outermost electron is in a higher principal shell, placing it much farther from the nucleus than lithium's outer electron
Moving down a group adds a principal shell, so the outermost electron in potassium is in a shell farther from the nucleus; filled inner shells also shield it. More protons do not eliminate this effect, and neutrons do not expand an atom.
From practice test 2 of our TEAS study guide (question 37). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 39Easy
In which cellular locations do transcription and translation occur in a typical eukaryotic cell?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Transcription occurs in the nucleus, and translation occurs in the cytoplasm.
In a eukaryotic cell, RNA polymerases synthesize mRNA in the nucleus, and cytoplasmic ribosomes then translate it. This location difference follows directly from the presence of a nuclear envelope.
From practice test 8 of our TEAS study guide (question 73). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 40Hard
In formal written English, which pronoun correctly completes the sentence? Everyone assigned to the unit must finish _ orientation checklist before the end of the month.
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. his or her
In formal English, 'everyone' is singular and requires a singular pronoun. The singular possessive 'his or her' agrees with it, while the plural 'their' is the common error.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 49). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 41Easy
In a survey, 12.5% of respondents reported a specific symptom. What is 12.5% as a decimal?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. 0.125
Move the decimal point two places to the left and drop the percent sign, turning 12.5% into 0.125. Moving the decimal only one place would give 1.25, which equals 125%, not 12.5%.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 39). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 42Medium
When a test question asks about the meaning of a single difficult sentence, the reader should return to that sentence and ask a set of three questions. Which set is most useful for close reading?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. What does it literally say? What does it imply beyond the literal words? Why did the author word it in this particular way?
Close reading probes literal content, unstated implication, and the author's deliberate choice of wording. Grammatical labels, paragraph position, and synonym substitution locate facts rather than interpret meaning.
From practice test 4 of our TEAS study guide (question 142). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 43Medium
A tissue sample from beneath the skin contains loosely arranged collagen and elastin fibers, scattered fibroblasts, and many small blood vessels. This tissue most directly performs which function?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. Cushioning and binding organs while allowing flexibility
The description identifies areolar connective tissue, a loose connective tissue that cushions and binds organs. Nervous tissue conducts signals, adipose tissue stores triglycerides, and red bone marrow produces blood cells.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 166). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 44Medium
A resting adult has a heart rate of 70 beats per minute and a stroke volume of 70 mL per beat. What is the cardiac output?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. 4.9 L/min
Cardiac output equals heart rate times stroke volume, so 70 beats/min times 70 mL/beat is 4,900 mL/min, or 4.9 L/min. The other values result from misplacing the decimal during conversion to liters.
From practice test 6 of our TEAS study guide (question 5). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 45Medium
In standard nuclide notation, the isotope iodine-131 is written as ¹³¹_53I. Which part of this notation is the mass number?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. The superscript 131
In nuclide notation, the mass number is the superscript written to the upper left of the element symbol. The subscript 53 is the atomic number, not the mass number.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 125). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 46Hard
A researcher finds that an interactive anatomy app improved anatomy quiz scores for 200 first-semester nursing students at one university, compared with students using printed flashcards. Which conclusion is most clearly supported by the study?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. The app may improve anatomy quiz performance for similar students under comparable conditions
This wording is appropriate because the sample included nursing students at one university studying anatomy. Statements about all students or all subjects go beyond the sample, and assuming the app cannot work elsewhere is also unsupported.
From practice test 5 of our TEAS study guide (question 86). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 47Medium
Which sentence uses its and it's correctly?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. The pharmacy confirmed its supply, and it's available for immediate delivery.
'Its' is the possessive form, so 'its supply' is correct; 'it's' is the contraction of 'it is,' so 'it's available' is correct. The distractors reverse these spellings.
From practice test 3 of our TEAS study guide (question 109). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 48Easy
Convert 45% to its equivalent decimal form.
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. 0.45
Because percent means per hundred, 45% is 45/100, which is 0.45. Moving the decimal point two places to the left from 45.0 gives 0.45; moving it three places gives 0.045.
From practice test 4 of our TEAS study guide (question 42). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 49Easy
A reader opens a five-paragraph expository passage about standard precautions in hospitals. If the author is following the most common TEAS pattern, where should the reader expect the main idea to be announced?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. In the first sentence or early in the opening paragraph
Expository passages usually announce the main idea early, often in the first sentence or the opening paragraph. A supporting example or a conclusion-only placement is not the standard expository pattern.
From practice test 7 of our TEAS study guide (question 97). Original question, not an official exam item.
Question 50Easy
A magnetic resonance image is obtained along a plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves. Which anatomical plane is this?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Midsagittal (median) plane
A midsagittal or median plane passes exactly through the midline, producing equal left and right halves. Parasagittal planes are offset from the midline and produce unequal halves.

Quick answers
How many questions are on the TEAS?
170 questions, of which 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest questions mixed in. You cannot tell which ones are unscored.
How long is the TEAS?
209 minutes of testing, about 3 hours 29 minutes, plus a 10-minute break after math. Each section has its own clock and time does not carry over.
What is the passing score on the TEAS?
There is no universal passing score. ATI says each school sets its own minimum, and many weigh the TEAS alongside GPA and other factors, so check your program.
Can I go back to a TEAS section?
You can move between questions inside a section as long as time remains. Once you submit a section, you cannot return to it.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the TEAS?
No. ATI says unanswered questions count as incorrect and there is no penalty for guessing, so answer every question.
What are the sections of the TEAS?
Reading, math, science, and English and language usage, always in that order. Science has the most questions: 50 in 60 minutes.
