How Hard Is the OCN Exam? What the Numbers Say

Published 2026-10-30 · Facts and text checked 2026-10-16 · Reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer

The OCN exam is demanding because it is long and weighted: 165 questions in 3 hours across six areas, a quarter of them on symptom management, with emergencies at 16%. The pass mark is a scaled score of 55, so there is no fixed percentage to aim for; strong clinical reasoning matters more than memorized lists.

Questions often describe a patient and ask for the priority nursing action, which is harder than recalling a definition. Emergencies such as tumor lysis syndrome or spinal cord compression are classic examples.

Because the passing standard is scaled, the number of correct answers needed changes slightly from one test form to another. Practice until you are consistently well above the line, not just near it.
