Twelve competencies, from 16% down to 4%
This blueprint is split into many small pieces. Only one competency reaches double digits:
| Competency | Weight |
|---|---|
| 1. Nature of science | 16% |
| 2. Composition, characteristics and structure of Earth | 9% |
| 3. Plate tectonics and related processes | 9% |
| 10. Earth's climate patterns | 9% |
| 11. Astronomical objects and processes | 9% |
| 4. Earth's surface processes | 8% |
| 7. Characteristics and management of Earth's resources | 8% |
| 8. Oceans and coastal processes | 8% |
| 9. Factors that influence atmospheric conditions and weather | 8% |
| 6. Scope and measurement of geologic time | 6% |
| 12. Space exploration | 6% |
| 5. Mapping and remote sensing | 4% |
Nature of science, at 16%, is about 13 questions on an 80-question test, which is my arithmetic from Florida's percentages. It covers lab safety and regulations, experimental design, accuracy, precision and error, reading data in tables, graphs and diagrams, and scientific communication. It is the one block that is not Earth or space content, and it is bigger than any Earth science topic.
Six of twelve competencies name Florida
Each of these competencies includes at least one Florida-specific skill:
- Surface processes: the origin and distribution of Florida freshwater, and Florida's geologic features.
- Geologic time: Florida's geologic history and sea-level changes.
- Earth's resources: Florida's geologic, marine and environmental resources.
- Atmosphere and weather: Florida weather systems.
- Climate patterns: climate change effects on Florida.
- Space exploration: the effects of Florida's space program.
Those six competencies add up to 45% of the test, though Florida does not say how many questions inside each one are about Florida. Plan to study the state examples from Florida sources, not only from a general Earth science text.
The ceiling, the scale and the retake rule
Florida lists Earth/Space Science 6-12 at a maximum of 69% correct. Forms vary slightly in difficulty, so a harder form can need a little less, and the table (updated October 10, 2026) says tests under extra review may see slight increases. Results are PASS or NOT PASS. After a NOT PASS you can retake 31 days after your most recent attempt, and anyone within 10 scaled points of 200 can ask for a score verification session.
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest part of the test?
Mapping and remote sensing, at 4% of the questions.
Does the test allow reference materials?
No. The test page lists none.
How soon do I see my result?
On-site reports are usually provided right after testing, except for tests being redeveloped or revised. Official reports are released within 4 weeks.
Is the question count exact?
No. Florida describes it as approximately 80 multiple-choice questions, and some questions may be under evaluation and not scored.
