The short answer: TExES scores are reported on a scale of 100 to 300, and 240 is the minimum passing score. The longer answer matters, because a scaled score is not a percentage and a few TExES exams are passed subject by subject.
Why 240 is not "80%"
Each selected-response question you answer correctly earns one raw point. Your raw score is then converted to the 100-300 scale. The conversion exists because different forms of the same exam are not equally hard: the scale puts every form on the same footing, so 240 means the same standard whichever form you get. The number of correct answers needed to reach 240 is therefore not published and can differ between forms. The passing standards were set by the Texas Commissioner of Education with input from Texas educators.
Exams with more than one part
Core Subjects EC-6 (391) and Core Subjects 4-8 (211) have no total passing score. Your status is "Passed" only if each subject exam reaches a scaled score of 240 or higher. On the 391 that means five separate 240s: English Language Arts and Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education.
Reading the domain counts on your report
The score report shows, for each domain and competency, how many scored questions there were and how many you answered correctly. Domains and competencies have no passing scores of their own, and the testing program warns that counts based on small numbers of questions (generally fewer than 10) are too small for meaningful conclusions. Use them to decide where to study next, not as a verdict.
If you did not reach 240
Texas allows five attempts per certification exam (the first attempt plus four retakes), with at least 30 days between attempts. On the multi-part Core Subjects exams you retake only the subject exams you did not pass.
