Two numbers, one standard
The CCHT standard comes with two numbers: 95 is the standard score you must receive, and 74% is the share of questions NNCC links to it. NNCC's exam page states it as a fact, while its older preparation guide says "about 74% correct". Treat 74% as the benchmark and 95 as the number that appears on your report.
NNCC does not say whether the 74% is measured against all 150 questions or only the scored ones, and the pages we read do not give the top of the standard-score scale. So we do not turn 74% into a question count.
Why a fixed standard, not a curve
NNCC explains that a panel of technicians, both experienced and newly certified, sets the passing score using the Angoff procedure. The panel reviews each question and judges its difficulty, and the passing score reflects the estimate of the panel of the level needed to show an acceptable level of knowledge and skill. Your result is compared with that predetermined standard, not with how other test takers did. Passing does not depend on who else sat the exam that day.
The questions that do not count
About 25 of the 150 questions are new "pilot" questions that are not scored. NNCC uses them to check whether a question is valid before it becomes a scored one. The exam does not mark which ones they are, so answer every question as if it counts.
What your score report shows
The score report is available at the end of your exam. If you pass, it shows your score and tells you when to expect your certificate and when your name will appear in the NNCC Certified Directory. If you do not pass, it shows your score plus the percent of questions you answered correctly in each of the four blueprint areas: Clinical, Technical, Environment and Role Responsibilities. Use that breakdown to decide where to study next.
If you miss the mark
NNCC's preparation guide says there is no limit on how many times you can take the exam. A new application is required, and the exam fee is $225, which includes a $50 non-refundable application processing fee. An expedited review, which NNCC lists at $75, is available if you need a permit quickly.
Frequently asked questions
