ASCP MLT Passing Score 2026: 400 on a 100-999 Scale
November 2, 2026 · Alex S. · reviewed by Hana N., Quality Reviewer · how we write
The ASCP MLT passing score is 400 on a scaled range of 100 to 999. The exam is computer adaptive, so ASCP states there is no set number or percentage of correct answers needed to pass.
The ASCP MLT passing score is 400 on a scaled range of 100 to 999. Because the exam is computer adaptive, ASCP says there is no set number of questions you must answer correctly to pass, and no set percentage either. The exam has 100 questions and runs 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Why you cannot count your way to 400
On a fixed-form exam you can add up right answers. On an adaptive exam you cannot. ASCP BOC explains that scoring is based on the overall pattern of your responses, not simply how many you got right. The system keeps re-estimating your ability as you answer, and different questions carry different amounts of information, so they do not all move your score by the same amount.
That estimate is converted to a scaled score on the 100-999 scale. The minimum passing score is 400, but do not read it as 40 percent: ASCP says there is no set percentage to reach. You pass when your final measure is at or above the minimum passing standard.
How the adaptive exam picks your next question
- The exam opens with a question whose difficulty is close to the passing standard.
- A correct answer leads to a slightly harder question. An incorrect answer leads to a slightly easier one.
- The system chooses questions that give the most information about your current estimated ability, aiming for about a 50% chance that you answer each one correctly.
- Questions follow the content guideline percentages, but they are not grouped by subject. Items from different areas can follow one another.
The practical result is that the exam is built to feel hard, because the system aims for about a 50% chance on each question. ASCP also warns against a popular idea: missing questions on purpose to get easier ones does not work, because the algorithm is built to prevent it and can leave you needing more correct answers to make up the lower estimate.
Rules that shape your pacing
- You must answer each question before moving to the next. Questions cannot be skipped.
- You can flag questions and review them only if time remains after you have answered all of them.
- Changing an answer does not change the questions you already received.
- Field test questions are mixed in and are not scored. ASCP says they are indistinguishable from scored ones, so treat every question as real.
Content areas for the MLT
ASCP's June 2026 content guideline gives each area as a range of the 100 questions:
| Content area | Share of exam |
|---|---|
| Chemistry | 20 - 25% |
| Hematology | 20 - 25% |
| Blood Banking | 15 - 20% |
| Microbiology | 15 - 20% |
| Urinalysis and Other Body Fluids | 5 - 10% |
| Immunology | 5 - 10% |
| Laboratory Operations | 5 - 10% |
What you see after the exam
You see a preliminary pass or fail on screen at the end. The official report is available in your ASCP account, and a notification is emailed within four business days once your transcripts have been processed. It shows pass or fail and your scaled score. If you fail, it also breaks the result down by subtest area. Passing candidates do not get a breakdown.
The application fee for the MLT(ASCP) route is $235, and it is not refundable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the passing score for the ASCP MLT?
400 on a scale of 100 to 999.
How many questions do I need to get right?
ASCP says there is no set number and no set percentage. Your result depends on the pattern of your responses across the whole adaptive exam.
How many questions are on the MLT exam and how long is it?
100 questions in 2 hours and 30 minutes. A separate MLT exam used only for California state licensure has 80 questions and 2 hours.
Can I skip a question and return later?
No. Each question must be answered before you move on, though you can flag questions and review them if time is left at the end.
Does a harder question mean I am doing badly?
Not necessarily. ASCP says the adaptive system raises difficulty after a correct answer and aims for about a 50% chance of success on each question.
