Preparing for the CSET Multiple Subjects? Take a free readiness test and see which topics to study first.

This is the short, sourced answer to the questions candidates ask most about the CSET: Multiple Subjects (Subtests 101, 214, 225): how many questions, how long it takes, what is on it and what you need to pass. Every number below comes from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CSET, administered by Pearson)'s own pages, linked at the end, and was checked on October 10, 2026.

California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CSET, administered by Pearson) lists 7 content areas:

  • Subtest I: Reading, Language, and Literature

  • Subtest II: Science
  • Subtest II: Mathematics
  • Subtest III: Physical Education
  • Subtest III: Human Development
  • Subtest III: Visual and Performing Arts

The passing score

220 on each subtest.

Scaled or raw, this is the official standard: plan to clear it with a margin, because exam forms differ in difficulty.

How to use this to plan your preparation

  1. Check your starting point by area. Take a mixed set of questions and look at your results per content area, not just the total. The real exam has 154 questions, so practise in blocks that match its pace.
  2. Work the weakest area first, in short sessions, and read every explanation, including the questions you got right.
  3. Finish with full timed practice that matches the official time (Subtests I and II: 3 hours each; Subtest III: 2 hours 15 minutes; all three in one session: 5 hours), so the length of the exam is not a surprise on test day.

154 questions across the three subtests: 143 multiple-choice and 11 constructed-response. Multiple-choice questions are 70% and constructed-response questions 30% of each subtest score.
